Backpacking in the Eastern Sierras

July 13-15  A 3-Day Experiential intensive.  Backpacking in the Eastern Sierras is an experiential wilderness backpacking event sponsored by Illuman SoCal.

This event is for any man interested in backpacking and personal growth through nature encounter, ritual, ceremony and self-reflection.  Hiking starts Friday morning returning Sunday afternoon. The trip will be experiential employing group council, dyads, and time for solitude. The weekend will promote safety, introspection, connection with God, and camaraderie with our brothers.

The focus of will be on 3 aspects of Thomas Merton’s writings: love, connection and gratitude. Through various group and individual processes and rituals we will look at the influence of Thomas Merton and our experience of others in the group to help us better understand the connection with ourselves and our spirituality.

Event Details:
Date: July 13 – 15, 2017 (we recommend camping at the trailhead on July 12th to help acclimatize)
Location: Cottonwood Lakes, Eastern Sierra Nevada Mountains – Trailhead to basecamp is around 6
miles with 1300 feet elevation gain (9940 ft. to 11,242 ft.)
We have permits for 12 participants. There will be 2 leads. All men are welcome. Please keep
in mind that you must be in a healthy condition to backpack in altitude between 10,000-12,000 feet.
Conditioning prior to the trip is highly recommended. A medical clearance by your MD is required.
Space is limited to so please sign up early.
Cost: The weekend is $160 per person. Each person is responsible for their food and equipment.
We have some equipment that we can loan. Certain gear can also be rented at REI. We will provide
list of necessary equipment and make sure you are well prepared.
